Field trapping trials of sex pheromone for Holcocerus hippophaecolus (Lepidoptera: Cossidae)

    • Four sorts of sex pheromones that were mixed at different ratios with three kinds of main sex pheromone components of seabuckthorn carpenter moth: (Z)-7-tetradecenyl acetate (Z7-14:Ac), (E)-3-tetradecenyl acetate (E3-14:Ac) and (E)-7-tetradecenyl acetate (E7-14:Ac), were experimented in the field. The results showed that four kinds of pheromones all had strong, attractive effects on male moths. The largest numbers of moths trapped were 17 males per trap and 11 males per day. The most effective pheromone can last up to 26 days. The effective trapping distances of the different attractants reached 100 and 150 m respectively. Comparing the effects of the two traps to capture male carpenter moths, it is found that the new and practical trap is slightly less effective than the triangle trap, while it is convenient, easily operated and can last a long time. The best height to hang the trap is 1 m. So the application of this sex pheromone provides a new technique for the integrated control of H. hippophaecolus since it is highly effective, nonpoisonous and non-polluting.
