Wetland classification and its encoding system in China

    • Wetland classification is one of the most complicated areas in wetland science research,no classification principles and systems have been approved.Wetlands in China are characterised by their multiple types, huge numbers, notable differences between regions, and rich biodiversity. In order to facilitate the management of wetland resources,a scientific and comprehensive classification system should be established.Encoding based on the classifying system is the prerequisite and foundation of wetland resources informatization and scientific management. On the basis of such key natural elements as the administrative divisions, physiognomy, climate, vegetation etc.of the wetland, combining with the Ramsar classification system, this paper put forward a classification and encoding system of the wetlands in China.
