Roughness and roughness sense of wood surface from different machining processes.

    • Surface roughness of Fraxinus mandshurica Rupr., Populus tomentosa Carr.and Cunninghamia lanceolata(Lamb.)Hook.wood from different cutting processes was measured by a stylus method and analyzed with various factors. Then the surface roughness sense was analyzed by a psychometric method and the relation between the psychological values of touching and vision was discussed. The sawed‚milled‚peeled and sanded surfaces of wood pieces were used to measure the surface roughness and the psychological values of touching and vision‚in order to obtain the effects of the wood species‚method of machining‚radial or tangential section and wood surface structure on the surface roughness of wood. Results show that species‚method of machining‚ radial or tangential section and wood surface structure affect the surface roughness of wood. The roughness of wood surfaces decreases with the increase in processing precision. The correlation between the psychological values of touching and vision for softwoods is a little higher than that of hardwoods.
