Abstract
The investigation and analysis of gaps in Castanopsis kawakamii forests showed that the importance of C.kawakamii lied in both open and closed forests, which indicated that this species was not particularly sensitive to the recurrence of gaps, generated both inside existing openings and in closed forest canopies. The results showed that individual trees of C.kawakamii were lumped together in groups.DBH distribution of C.kawakamii population in the gaps fit a Beta distribution with many trees concentrated near the edge of the forest openings.Age structure of C.kawakamii, both in open and closed parts of the forests, was such that the largest number of trees was found either in the age class <10 years or >70 years. The smallest number of trees was found between the ages of ten and seventy years, which showed a serious imbalance in age structure of this species. It is concluded that, intervention on the part of the administration is necessary in management of C.kawakamii forests.
