Characteristics of toluene flux along environmental gradient of coastal salt marsh in northern Jiangsu Province

The fluxes of toluene were seasonally measured using static flux chambers from April 2004 to January 2005, along environmental gradient of a coastal salt marsh in the north of Jiangsu Province. To estimate the contribution of higher plants to the toluene flux, aboveground biomass of plant were experimentally removed and the flux differences between the treatment and the intact were examined. The results showed that the vegetated salt marsh generally acted as a net sink of toluene during the growing season(from April to October) along the environmental gradient. Consumptive rate of toluene ranged from 2.50 to 17.45 μmol/(m 2.d), and the maximum consumptive rate occurred at the cordgrass(Spartina alterniflora) marsh. During the nongrowing season(from November to March), the vegetated marsh was a minor source of toluene when soil was frozen, and the emission rate ranged from 5.15 to 10.76 μmol/(m 2.d). The mudflat served as a source of toluene no matter during the growing or nongrowing season. Overall, the coastal salt marsh was a large sink for toluene because the consumption rate of toluene was larger than emission rate, and because the duration of the growing season was longer than that of the nongrowing season. Plant aboveground biomasses had a great effect on the direction and magnitude of the toluene flux. However, the mechanism underlying plant uptake process is not clear. The toluene consumption rate was positively related to soil temperature, light intensity, the dissolved salt concentration, organic matter content, sulfate concentration, and initial ambient atmospheric concentration of toluene.
