Abstract
Dry seeds of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea), carried into space by China’s first seed-breeding satellite, were selected to investigate the germination, morphological and photosynthetic characteristics of the plants. The results show that after spaceflight mutation, the germination and emergence rates of seeds were not significantly different from that of control seeds. Plant height and leaf width increased significantly, while the number of tillers and leaves were not significantly different. Two dwarf mutants, M1 and M2 with more tillers and narrow leaves were isolated. The photosynthetic rate per unit leaf area, as well as the photosynthetic and transpiration rates of entire mutant plants were higher than those of the control. The improved ability of photosynthesis and higher transpiration may be one of the reasons that mutants can retain their high speed of tillering.
