Abstract
A false topographic perception phenomenon is often an obstacle when using remote sensing images, especially for non-professionals. Three new methods were developed to correct this false topographic perception phenomenon in remote sensing images. They are 1) fusion of the weighted image and weighted shaded relief model (SRM) by applying intensity-hue-sat uration (IHS) transform, 2) multiplying the images by SRM and 3) modifying the illumination site based on topographic correction. A case study based on a QuickBird image was made to compare the new methods with five existing methods. Our empirical results indicate that the three new methods are better than previous ones by obtaining optimal visual quality, preserving the spectra of images and effective removal of false topography. Derived from the conventional method of SRM-IHS fusion, the first method can yield true topographic perception images with colors similar to the original images. The second method, a simple process with good effects, meets map-making specifications. The third method preserves the spectral information of images by changing the location of the light source, but produces image requiring further quantitative studies.
