Effects of vegetation restoration models on soil nutrients in an abandoned quarry

We investigated the nutrient content of soils under various vegetation restoration models in an abandoned quarry in Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province, northeastern China. The results show that restored vegetation can increase the soil nutrient content in abandoned quarry sites. In 5--10 cm deep soil layer, the ratio of the content of available phosphorus in the revegetated sites to that in the control (unvegetated) was less than 1, while the ratio of organic content to control was more than 10 and that of the content of other nutrients ranged from 1.05 to 3.17. Site preparation techniques also significantly affected soil nutrient content, of which the way of replaced soil + seedling agent was the best for vegetation restoration in this abandoned quarry. After five-year vegetation restoration, the soil nutrient content in the revegetated site showed similar levels between the addition of original soil and replaced one.
